Mohsin Shafi (b.1982) is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Lahore, Pakistan, who is proactive about carving space, self-representation and self-empowerment using art and activism to forge creative survival in Pakistan art scene. He is a two-spirited activist; whose practice focuses on the inter-connectivity of tradition, modernity, culture, religion, and sexuality and on the ability of these forces to produce and perpetuate systems of oppression and domination.
Shafi use collages, video works, text pieces, installations and performance, focusing on de-constructive techniques of resistance such as interruption, confusion, and disturbance. He often uses non-conforming bodies as a vehicle of assemblage and embodiment. He primarily engages local narratives and challenges the danger of being visibly non-conforming within a militant state, the danger of being seen through the lens of sexual taboos, gender binaries, ethnic hierarchies, and religious strictures.
