Description
Verstraëten’s work is based on two different techniques: painting and mono print. She likes to print everyday found objects which people discard, picking them up from streets or recycling places. Instead of using a transfer material, she inks the object itself and prints directly onto the paper, producing a rich texture and embossing which creates an intimate connection to the work.
In her series of ‘Platter’, a lost world of music comes to life again! she plays with the size of the vinyl (33, 45 or 78) and with the very fine groves to make the recorded music visible. She discovered that the design of the surface changes depending on the type of music. A classical piece is longer, hence, wider than a pop song. Sometimes, she exaggerates the scratches – like music going wild.
