About Ranita Roy

I’m from Andul, a small town near Kolkata, India. I completed Masters degree in Environmental Science from Asutosh College (Kolkata).

Photography is a kind of meditation for me. I started photography in 2015. I love to capture everything around me, yet I have a very special interest in narrative photography.

I joined Thomson Reuters in March 2019 as a Freelance Photojournalist and completed different projects under the State Government of West Bengal along with many self-projects like Old Age Happiness, Sleep Paralysis, Flood affected areas, Child Labor, Health care issue, Animal rights and many more.

I was awarded a scholarship from NOOR for Foundry Photojournalism Workshop 2018, Timothy Allen Photography Scholarship Award 2018, vii academy scholarship for Finding your visual voice workshop – New York (2019) and in 2019 I’ve been selected for 7th annual New York Portfolio Review organized by The New York Times at New York.

I have won diverse photography challenges on a National and International level including UNESCO (Climate change), 7th National Photography Award (India), Honorable Mention in Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage Award, West Bengal State Award by PrafullaDahanukar Art Foundation and being top 10 finalists of International Women Photographer Award 2017.

Many of my photos and photograph stories were published in various media like Reuters, The New York Times, BBC, The Guardian, The National (UAE), The Economic Times, Hindustan Times, Feature Shoot etc.

For you photography is?

Meditation. Where my mind and body both is in alignment and I'm totally present in that moment.

Can you describe your work in this series?

I photograph to reproduce the feeling of the moment. I look for a sense of defiance and fortitude in my work. I hunt the moment of mystery, surprise and humor and love to show the different moments and moods of life. I focus on a place with regular people in exaggerated situations that highlight an aspect of who they are.

Do you see your work as Art Photo or Photojournalism, or do you believe in these 2 categories ?

I work as an artistic photojournalist, where I describe a story in an artistic way. I like to combine both in a poetic way.

Your photos are about India and its population, what are you trying to tell or achieve?

Like every region worldwide, my country also has positive and negative aspects. I would love to show the positive aspects to the world along with the negative aspects to the society to take a measure of rectification. I love to preserve moments from now for the future so that when I will look back I can sense the essence and soul of that moment.
